Review of Barry's latest book, "Out on Good Behavior"

 Before going any further, full disclosure that Barry is a friend of mine, and has been a stalwart supporter of our advocacy work over the past 10 years. He's been a goldmine for many of us, always available for any question or query we may have, and he has even assisted my daughters when they had a math question (or two).

Having said that, I'm absolutely delighted with Barry's new book, "Out on Good Behavior".   He said to me recently, this book is for us, the regular people, who know the realities of today's math class." And boy, does he ever deliver!

I've read all of Barry's books, and he just keeps getting better with every book he writes.  He uses humour as effectively as his 1961 Dolciani textbook, and his genuine relationship with his students is evident from the first page. It's refreshingly candid and I was constantly chuckling as I turned the pages.

If you're a parent of a school aged child, you'll recognize the daily battle that occurs in math class. It doesn't have to be this way. Barry shows how effective math instruction doesn't have to be a frustrating experience. The first step is having a knowledgeable teacher at the front of the class. And that's where these kids have hit the goldmine.  Barry's extensive knowledge of mathematics is crucial in ensuring his students will have a chance at mastering all the steps required to conquer Algebra and beyond.  His students are really fortunate, in having a master teacher at this crucial stage of their development (Grade 7 &8), and they will, in years to come, look back fondly and say a silent "thank you" to Mr. Garelick throughout various stages of their life.  If only more kids could be so lucky.   

I highly recommend this book. It's an easy read, yet it leaves a powerful impact.
