Captain of a Sinking Ship

On October 15, 2022, voters will be asked to elect a full slate of candidates across a number of regions. Amongst these options, the voting public will be asked to elect Trustees to their local school board.

In one circumstance, SD 63 voters (YOU) will be asked to consider Dr. Elder, a former Superintendent as an option.  Before considering him however, you should have some insight into the impact his leadership previously had on our school district.

Dr. Elder was our Superintendent in School District 63 between 2005-2017. During that timeframe, all assessment measures indicate marked declines in all areas of student achievement: reading/writing, and mathematics.

Results of the Foundational Student Assessments are here:

I discussed other provincial and international assessment in a previous post.  This low level of performance was achieved despite significant increases in associated budgets.

As a long suffering parent in School District 63, I can attest to the many trips to the District Office and conversations I had with Dr. Elder regarding financial issues at my kids’ school as well as concerns as to what and how they were being taught in the classroom.  Financial reviews were requested through his Office and were ignored each and every time.  Control of PAC funds was taken away from parents and given to school administrators – all approved by his Office, and promises to review floundering results in literacy and numeracy were all but ignored.

Then there was the little matter of a taxpayers funded trip that SD63 contributed $8000 for a 17 year old student to fly to Finland and write a report on…wait for it…education.  The Canadian Taxpayer Federation reported on it which warranted a change in legislation to ensure this might never happen again.

This is the status quo, right now, in SD63. Keven Elder was captain of this sinking ship, and now he just wants you to trust him, to continue to collect a pension from taxpayers and carry on, as a Trustee in this community.   I say no, vote for somebody (anybody) else.
